I was raised as a Quaker, in the Amish and Mennonite community of Lancaster, Pa. So when I read Elaine’s book I was taken back to that tight knit way of life with the very strict rules of social behavior. This plain way of life leaves no room for outside thoughts and opinions.
It is a closed group and the sins of it members are dealt with by elders and are equally quieted and hushed. When I read the book I found myself walking with Elaine and crying with her. I remember, I thought, I remember.
As a man who left the “group” the trip was rough, but for a young woman the trip is almost unbearable. The Heart breaks and troubled life that lays ahead for the women are well documented in this wonderful book of her journey.
This is a must read for those thinking that their life can never be happy. It’s a fantastic story of one woman's search for God. I feel inspired by Elaine’s journey and wish her the best.
